Transvaginal Mesh Lawsuit Information

When women suffer from pelvic organ prolapse or stress incontinence, there are many different treatments that they will turn to. One of the most popular has been that of pelvic and bladder support products, such as transvaginal mesh and sling products. This, however, has not been a treatment that has been without its concerns. In 2008, the FDA began to communicate worry about the health issues that were linked to this treatment option. With issues that range from vaginal erosion to mesh shrinkage, excessive bleeding and even organ perforation, these FDA warnings have only grown in severity over time - to the point where it's no longer recommended within America.

Treating Pelvic Organ Prolapse with Transvaginal Mesh - The Complications

Pelvic organ prolapse is the medical condition in which the support within the vagina deteriorates (from childbirth, old age or simply genetics), causing "sagging." This results in organs, such as the bladder, urethra and cervix, to drop and to begin protruding through the opening of the vagina. When this occurs, it can also result in urinary stress incontinence - causing the person to suffer from involuntary urination, usually during physical activity or even from something as simple as coughing or sneezing.

Transvaginal mesh is used as a pelvic/bladder support system and is, essentially, an implantable plastic device. This is inserted and placed in the pelvic region with the help of stitches through surgery. By stitching the transvaginal mesh into place around the damaged area, theoretically, the product was claimed to help slow the symptoms of pelvic organ prolapse and to help women find some relief.

Understanding the Side Effects of Defective Transvaginal Mesh and Sling Products

While good in theory, it has been found that those who have undergone surgery to implant the transvaginal mesh have been placed at risk of suffering from severe side effects. In fact, over a few years, the FDA has received over 1,500 reports of a defective product - reports showing that more than 15% of women who underwent the surgery experienced "erosion" or other complications. Common failures that have been attributed to this type of treatment include, but aren't limited to, the following:

  • Erosion through vaginal tissue;
  • Pain and infection;
  • Severe bleeding;
  • Painful sexual intercourse; and
  • Organ perforation from surgery

There have also been reports of the mesh disintegrating following the procedure, resulting in the fragments to flow throughout the body and become embedded. This causes severe internal infection, inflammation and pain. However, due to the tiny size of the fragments and the body's natural scar tissue, the mesh is unable to be removed completely - resulting in prolonged suffering.
